Equipment Exchange

As we all know hockey can be an expensive sport and with our growing players they do not last in their equipment long.

This week there will be an equipment exchange.  This will be in the small conference room outside the snack bar (near microwaves) at the civic center.

Please feel free to drop off any of your outgrown hockey equipment.  And feel free to take something you need.

Items donated should be in good condition.  Please no expired helmets.

Donations can be brought in starting today 9/13.  Exchange will end on 10/1.  There are no hours.  When the GCCC is open you may donate or take something that you need.

IMPORTANT - REVISED PRACTICE SCHEDULE

Dear Knights Families:

Due to some unforseen scheduling conflicts we had to make some adjustments to the 2018-2019 practice schedule that was released just a few days ago. We take great efforts to ensure consistancy and fairness for all of our teams. And, as much as we would like to resolve 100% of the scheduling conflicts we know that's going to be an impossible task. Multiple kids, multiple sports, multiple activities and competing interests are all very much a part of modern life.

Please take note of the new practice days/times listed below. We will work to get these added to the website schedules as soon as possible.

From Monday, 9/17 - Friday, 10/26 teams will practice as follows:

Monday

5:30 - 6:20:  Red White & Blue (U8)

6:30 - 7:20:  Squirt Major

7:30 - 8:20:  Midget House and Freeze U19

8:30 - 9:50:  Bantam Minor - DeTomaso

Tuesday

7:30 - 8:20:  Bantam Minor & Bantam Major

8:30 - 9:20:  Midget U15

9:30 - 10:20:  Midget U18

Wednesday

5:30 - 6:20:  Red White & Blue (U8)

6:30 - 7:20:  Squirt Major

7:30 - 8:20:  Midget House and Freeze U19

Thursday

5:30 - 6:20:  Squirt House

6:30 - 7:20:  Pee Wee Mixed & Pee Wee Major

7:30 - 8:20:  Bantam Minor & Bantam Major

8:30 - 9:20:  Midget U15

9:30 - 10:20:  Midget U18

*This practice schedule will change the week of 10/29 - 11/2 (the Midget travel team season will end and the Braves high school team will host tryouts).

*This practice schedule will change again the week of 11/5, but will then remain consistent throughout the remainder of the season.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Greg

Beginner Hockey - Starts October 20

The Canandaigua Knights Beginner Hockey program starts Saturday, October 20 and runs through December 15, 2018 (note: no session held November 24).  Participants will be on the ice from 9:00-9:50 a.m. For children not able to start on October 20, we ask that parents register now and join us when you can.  Cost:  $80    (Players also need to register with USA Hockey to obtain USA hockey registration number. This number is required to complete Canandaigua Knights beginner hockey registration.)

Beginner Hockey is a learn to skate program that transitions into beginner hockey for girls and boys ages 4-9. No experience is necessary. Jersey and hockey stick will be provided. You must provide: skates and mouth guard. Skates, while supplies last, can be rented at the Canandaigua Civic Center or new/used skates can be purchased for a nominal fee at various stores.

Other hockey equipment needed: helmet, gloves, shin guards and elbow pads.  These items are available for loan on a first come, first served basis and can be borrowed for a $80 refundable deposit due at time of pick-up. More information on borrowing equipment will be sent to registrants prior to October 20.

Register by clicking on the Register Online link on the left side of this page.  We look forward to seeing you in October!

Listed below are common questions related to beginner hockey:

Can my child participate with no/little skating experience?  Absolutely.  Children who participate in beginner hockey have varying levels of skating experience.

What equipment is required?   You must provide: skates and mouth guard. Other hockey equipment needed: helmet, gloves, shin guards and elbow pads.  These items are available for loan on a first come, first served basis and can be borrowed for a $80 refundable deposit due at time of pick-up. A jersey and hockey stick will be provided to all beginner skaters.

Note: Skates rented at the rink need to be returned after each session, so the skates are available for other young skaters during the week.

Can my child use figure skates?  No, coaches ask that all beginners have hockey skates.  Bring your own or rent from the Greater Canandaigua Civic Center, while supplies last. For those planning to bring their own, new/used skates can be purchased for a nominal fee at various stores.

What skate size should my child get?  This depends on the brand.  Typically it is 1-2 sizes smaller than shoe size. Greater Canandaigua Civic Center staff can help with fitting on rentals and most retailers can offer fitting assistance. We recommend this before purchase.

Do skates need to be sharpened?  If you have purchased new/used skates for your child, they will need to be sharpened. This can be done at the rink for a nominal fee.

Can I go on ice with skaters

We welcome volunteers who have played hockey or can skate. Requirements to do so include: helmet, skates and completing the Meghan’s Law screening on-line (see link below).  There is a $25 fee for this screening. The certificate of completion must be handed to a Canandaigua Knights Board representative before you can get on ice.  NYSAHA/USA Hockey Background Screening (On-line) - Also known as Meghan's Law: www.commercialinvestigationsllc.com/vssnysaha

What is the $80 registration fee used for?  Canandaigua Knights Hockey is run by many volunteers.  The money collected is primarily used for the cost of the ice and equipment.

Other helpful tips:

  • Plan to arrive at least 25 minutes early to dress your child in the hockey equipment, unless they come to rink dressed, to ensure they get on the ice on time.

  • Loose fitting pants are recommended (sweats/PJ bottoms ).You want pants to fit over shin guards. This makes it easier for skater to stand…plastic shin guards are very slippery on ice.

  • We recommend you take the equipment out of the bag to dry when you get home each week.

  • We’ve been asked where children can get additional ice time to improve their skating. The Greater Canandaigua Civic Center (gccc.org) offers open skate times to the public. See their website for details.

The mission of the Knights is to provide boys and girls in the Finger Lakes region an opportunity to play ice hockey with an emphasis on promoting life lessons and skill development in a positive and friendly environment that will evolve into a lifelong passion for the sport of hockey.
